  MOBIO Life Sciences Day at the Capitol What: Life Sciences Day at the State Capitol Make plans now to assist in advancing our legislative outreach efforts and ensure open dialogue with key Missouri policy makers. We will have a briefing program and lunch using the recently renovated G2 Gallery, 102 East High Street, starting at 11:00 am. The afternoon will be reserved primarily for Capitol office visits, and leadership briefings. We will round out the evening with a reception, enabling life sciences leaders and legislators an opportunity to deepen relationships. At our reception, we will be featuring the participation of those involved in last year's BIO Benchmarking legislative education tour. Those eleven legislators will be our honored guests that evening, and this endeavor is an important step in inspiring other legislators to follow their leadership.

BIO Benchmarking 2008 Statewide TourI - The Missouri Biotechnology Association hosts state legislators on a four-day, in-state tour of Missouri's life sciences and biotechnology assets. This fact finding education tour will focus on having the industry and the legislative participants deepen relationships with each other in order to find new priorities for the long-term good of the state and its approach to biotechnology issues. Expect large forum opportunities on the afternoon of July 14th in Kansas City and the morning of July 16 in St. Louis.

MOBIO Annual Conference / 2008 Summit on Life Sciences and Annual Meeting heads to Chateau on the Lake Resort near Branson, Missouri. Last year's conference energized state stakeholders, and 2008 promises another fresh and exciting meeting experience to cap off this busy election year and prepare for a new administration to take the help of state government. Best Practices for Growing a Biotech Industry Community Workshop at Biomedical Engineering Society Fall Conference / Renaissance Grand Hotel, St Louis, Missouri.

Wednesday, October 1, 2008, 1:30 - 6:00 p.m.
Organizers: Kelly Gillespie, Missouri Biotechnology Association; Frank Yin, Washington University; Rob Monsees, Missouri Technology Corporation
This workshop/tour will be of special interest to faculty and students, entrepreneurs, business development organizations and those in the related service sectors. We will begin with a brief introduction by Dick Fleming, President of St. Louis, RCGA and then follow with a panel discussion by experts in translation from academia to industry, entrepreneurship, business development, and early-stage funding who will share their insights and experiences with starting and growing a biotechnology industry community. Facilitator will be Sandy Miller, formerly from Stanford University and currently with The Kauffmann Foundation in Kansas City. Panelists include St. Louisans as well as experts from other successful cities such as:

  • William Danforth, Chancellor Emeritus of Washington University, Chairman, St. Louis Coalition for Plant and Life Sciences
  • Greg Johnson, managing partner, Prolog Ventures, St. Louis
  • Lee Herron, formerly at Georgia Tech, now VP of Commercialization, Georgia Research Alliance
  • John F. McDonnell, retired Chairman of McDonnell-Douglas Corp., Chairman of Biogenerator, St. Louis
  • Jay Watkins, managing director, DeNovo Ventures, Palo Alto, CA.
  • Sam Wickline, MD, Director Washington University Center for Translational Research in Advanced Imagingand Nanomedicine (C-TRAIN), cofounder Kereos and PixelExx Systems, Inc.

After the panel discussion, attendees will take a tour of several local facilities including the new research facility at Sigma-Aldrich Corp. and CORTEX, a unique research and business consortium housing Stereotaxis and C-TRAIN. The event will conclude with a networking reception at CORTEX for all participants.

SCOPE's vision is to relate the importance of Science and Technology, provide centralized information from education to workforce opportunities and connect citizens with science and innovation for the betterment of humankind.

Join SCOPE on Feb 4 and experience a Meet and Greet from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm there will be Hands On Science and meetings with legislators, and from 5:00 to 7:00 pm will be a Science Cafe Reception.

The Intersection of Animal and Human Health Opportunities for Collaboration between Canada and Kansas City Region will be co-presented by the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute and the Consulate General of Canada and will take place at the Stowers Institute.

8:30a.m. - noon– The program will include presentations by key Canadian and Kansas City area guest speakers in the field of animal and human health with an emphasis on comparative research.

  Missouri Life Sciences Week "Discovery and innovation for a healthier world". Missouri Life Sciences Week is an annual event held at the University of Missouri-Columbia to celebrate life sciences research and education at MU and throughout Missouri. It's a power-packed week featuring seminars by internationally-acclaimed scientists, a two-day research poster session with over 300 presenters, a vendor show, workshops, and career forums. Graduates of the BIO Benchmarking Program will present and interact with researchers at a program during the week.

MOBIO BIO Benchmarking 2007 Graduates Speak at MU Life Sciences Week Program - Columbia . Dr. Jack Schultz, director of the Bond Life Sciences Center, has invited 2008 BIO Benchmarking legislative graduates to a panel presentation during Missouri Life Sciences Week at an event co-sponsored by the Missouri Biotechnology Association. The event will be held on Thursday, April 16, at 3:30 p.m. in Monsanto Auditorium at the MU Bond Life Sciences Center. The panel will be similar in format to last year's presentation, and we think it will be particularly interesting to hear the legislators' perspectives after having been in the legislative session for several months, while interjecting the experiences of the 2007 and 2008 classes.

BIO 2009 Atlanta International Convention The Missouri Biotechnology Association (MOBIO) and the Missouri Department of Economic Development / Missouri Partnership serve as co-coordinators in leading this statewide delegation and annually supporting the Missouri Pavilion effort. Join the state's life sciences leaders and Gov. Nixon's adminstration cabinet leaders Ms. Linda Martinez (Director, Department of Economic Development) and Dr. Jon Hagler (Director, Department of Agriculture). MOBIO will be hosting members of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus to BIO 2009 Atlanta.
