Jewel D. Scott

Jewel D. Scott is the Executive Director of the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City, a membership organization of chief executive officers of major companies in the Kansas City metropolitan area.  Ms. Scott was named Executive Director in 1994, after serving for five years as Director of Research and Planning. Before joining the Civic Council’s staff Ms. Scott was a city manager and had previous experience as a member of the City Manger’s staff in Kansas City, Missouri and as a journalist.

Ms. Scott serves on the University of Kansas Advancement Board, the Missouri Biotechnology Association’s (MOBIO) Executive Committee and as Co-Chair of the MOBIO Public Policy Committee, the Governor’s Economic Stimulus Coordination Council, and the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association.  Ms. Scott is one of the partners in the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Blueprint initiative.  She represented Missouri on the Education Commission of the States (ECS) for several years, serving as a member of the ECS Steering Committee and the investment, strategic planning and executive committees. She has been appointed by Missouri governors to serve on various task forces and commissions on transportation, education standards, teacher preparation, higher education reform, and and math and science education, and served on the Governor’s Economic Stimulus Coordination Council. 

Ms. Scott was a founding board member of the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI) and served on the KCALSI Association’s Board of Directors as its treasurer.  She also was a founding member of the Advisory Board for PREP-KC, an education intermediary funded by the Gates Foundation and Kansas City philanthropy to facilitate reform in the metropolitan area’s urban school districts.

Ms. Scott holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a Master’s degree in Public Administration, both from the University of Kansas.  She is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and a member of the International City and County Management Association and the American Society for Public Administration.
